Now, here’s a riddle for you.
Why would the US government announce sanctions against M23’s military commander, Colonel Sultani Makenga, a matter of days before the final report of the Group of Experts on the DRC — aka The Hege Vendetta — finds its way to the UN Security Council?
And why would the US Treasury press release make absolutely no reference to the Hege report, relying instead on some generalized ranting of that notorious hysteric Navi Pillay, UN human rights commissioner, to justify their decision?
The answer is clear: by pre-empting Hege, they are disowning him — and sending a clear signal to the rest of the UN that they should do the same. Hege’s adventures have come to an end. The adults’ car has pulled into the driveway.
